  2. Jewelry Cleaning Tips

Gold if tarnished can be easily cleaned by adding a few drops of ammonia to soapy water. Submerge the jewelry and carefully brush with a soft-bristle toothbrush. Rinse it with lukewarm water and allow it to dry. To help keep it clean be sure to remove gold jewelry before showering or cleaning because as the soap and chemicals will form a film on the gold, which makes it appear dull and dingy. To restore the sparkle to untarnished jewelry, mix a few drops of mild dish detergent with warm water, and scrub with a soft-bristle toothbrush. Avoid chlorine as it can permanently damage or discolor your gold jewelry.

Silver and silver-plated items will dull over time when exposed to air. When not in use, store in an airtight bag to prevent tarnishing. For sterling silver, occasionally clean with a de-tarnishing cloth with silver polish. Apply a small amount of silver polish to a soft, clean cloth and rub gently (we love Wright's silver cleaner). Rinse in warm water and dry completely. The cuff is silver-plated. Do not put bracelet in sonic jewelry cleaner or immerse in liquid silver cleaner. Elements such as certain lotions, salt water, perfumes and even certain body pH levels may darken the cuff over time.

Pearls are made of layers of Nacre or Mother of Pearl, which is very soft by jewelry standards and easily damaged. Since it is an organic compound, pearls can be easily dulled or even eaten away by ordinary household chemicals and cleaners some of which contain alcohol. To clean pearls properly wash them in very mild soapy water and dry with s soft, lint free cloth. Store them in a cotton bag—never plastic—separate from other jewelry. To ensure that they stay lustrous, think outside the jewelry box: wearing them regularly will keep them polished, thanks to your body’s natural oils. When you take them off, wipe them with a dry cotton cloth.

Knotted or Tangled necklace?  Pour some salt into a small container and then put your silver or gold chain into the salt. Then using a round toothpick carefully work out the knots and tangles. The salt helps the knots come apart!
